Learn some phrases in the local language
First of all, when you travel to a foreign country where they speak English or a different language than your own, I suggest you learn some useful phrases and words. Also See:Maxi Cab

While English is spoken in most countries these days, learning some basic ways to communicate in their language is a good sign, which also shows respect and curiosity.

Just a simple hello or good morning can go a long way and even better if you learn how to say thank you.

Thank you in other languages

Book a Homestay Experience
Instead of a hotel, book a homestay experience where you stay in a local home. This is an alternative type of accommodation where you have to interact with the locals on a daily basis and make friends.

The experience of each householder is different, but often, the host family enjoys interacting with tourists. It is a cultural exchange, where guests can choose how much conversation they want to have or not.

Most homestays will also prepare traditional dinners that are homecooks, which is an experience you will not find in hotels. I have made homes in many destinations, but my favorite place was in Toscana where we lived in a house in the countryside.

We explored Toscana during the day and when we came back home in the evening, we ate dinner together and chatted about the differences and similarities between Italy and Sweden.

Meet local people
Even if you don't book a homestay experience, there are plenty of ways to meet local people. For example, before going to the destination, you can join Facebook groups and post that you like to do a local show around the city.

There are also websites where you can contact local people who are happy to meet tourists. And other websites where you can book guided tours and activities led by someone staying at the destination.

Many of them are very knowledgeable, but they also have an additional interest in meeting new people around the world. Often, you have a drink or dinner with the locals after the tour.

use public transportation
If you want to travel like a local, you should also roam around the destinations as the locals do. They do not take taxis when they need to go somewhere, they will not use public transport to get there. Also See: MaxiCab

Thailand is a great example where you can get a local experience by riding in one of the many songs. These minibuses travel by a few routes and are a cheap and fun way to explore Thailand's cities.

Visit the places you visit
Walking is another better way to experience the places where you travel. This is not always possible depending on the size of the city you visit, but in most places, you can at least walk and explore some mohallas.

By doing this, you walk from places where you miss while taking taxis or public transport. Also when you are walking around, you can find those hidden gems randomly.

In addition, when you roam, you will experience the smell and atmosphere of the places you visit.

Book AirBnB Experience
This is a relatively new feature by Airbnb, which allows you to book experiences with local hosts. It is similar to other websites already mentioned, but considering the size of AirBnB as a platform, it is available worldwide.

AirBnB is a great way to find accommodation in areas where locals are staying. If you don't want to build a homestay while traveling, you can rent a house in a local neighborhood.

One of my favorite Airbnb experiences that I've made was in Kyoto in Japan, where Christine and I took a class at the Macha Tea Ceremony. It was a lot of fun and we learned a lot as well we got some new Japanese friends.

Avoid tourist traps
The tourist trap can find a lot of tourists in every popular destination, some worse than others, and some tourists are too good to avoid the trap. One such tourist trap is the famous robot restaurant in Japan which is not to be missed when visiting Tokyo.

A tourist trap is basically something that is prepared at the rate of 100% to make money for tourists. Often, it will be of low quality and overprices. An example might be restaurants that are located along the tourist bar, these are often low-quality, with poor service but still priced higher than local restaurants due to location.

Other tourist traps can be stopped by taxi drivers or simply paid for a service that is advertised to tourists, although this is not really necessary. Tourist traps may also include attractions that are excessive and not advertised.
